Press Release - March 12th, 2009

What’s flying around Philly this March with 1200 legs and a GPA of 3.5?  Collegiate Cycling returns to Philadelphia for two days on March 28th and 29th in Fairmount Park for the 4th Annual Philly Phlyer Collegiate Race Weekend.  Put on by the Cycling Clubs from Drexel University, University of Pennsylvania, and Temple University, the Philly Phlyer is the largest Collegiate Cycling weekend in the Country with over 500 racers from all over the East Coast.  This year the event returns to Fairmount Park for both days, with races through Memorial Hall and West River Dr.

On Saturday, March 28th, is the traditional Schuylkill Challenge Circuit race through West Fairmount Park.  A fast, fun 6 mile course through the parks along Philadelphia's famous Schuylkill River and across from Boathouse Row, with just enough climbing and twists to spice things up. As with all the Phlyer's races, the entire course is closed to traffic and held on wide, very well-maintained roads with several excellent spectating points.  You can watch the riders suffer up the hills by Strawberry Mansion Bridge, or watch them fly along the river; it’s all up to you.

In the Morning of Sunday, March 29th, is the Trophy Bike’s Team Time Trial on West River Drive.  Using a long-established TTT course but adding just a few elements of its own, this is a near-ideal race for well-coordinated, powerful teams as they race against the clock on an almost totally flat, straight course.  Watch the teams of racers battle each other in the morning against the clock, but be sure to stay for the exciting Criterium that follows.

Legs tired from the effort against the clock, racers then mount up for the new Criterium course around Memorial Hall.  Nicknamed “The Rocket”, this three corner, 3/4 of a mile course offers a spectator a chance to see Collegiate racing up close.  This criterium is going to be fast and dangerous with racers flying around the course at high speeds and taking corners without any thoughts of themselves or brotherly love.  This course is spectator friendly, especially for children, as one can see the entire field for the whole race, offering many chances for photos.  Stay for our last race, which features many of the top collegiate riders in the country, many of them have been National Champions and will be racing the Philadelphia International race in June.

Racing is not just limited to Collegiate riders.  There will be USCF Circuit races on Saturday in three categories.  A Cat 4/Open category which allows for anybody who has interest in racing to mount up and try the course that the college racers are doing, a USCF Cat 3/4, and a USCF Women’s Cat 2/3/4.  There will also be an USCF Open/Alumni Team Time Trial category during the Trophy Bikes Team Time Trial on Sunday Morning.  Come out and watch your fellow Philadelphia residents as they race the same courses as the young guns.

For more race information, including parking, race schedule, course maps and information about the teams and sponsors of the event, visit the race website: http://2009phillyphlyer.pbwiki.com.

Be sure to come out and support the Collegiate Racers of Philadelphia as they do battle with the Colleges of the East Coast to see who wins it all in the City of Brotherly Love.
